It’s December already! Time just flies by in the rush of the holiday season. There’s just so much to do, and so little time—particularly for holiday shopping. If you want the perfect gift for everyone on your list, without breaking the bank, its important to strategize. This is part one of the blog series: a guide to efficient, less stress shopping this holiday season. Part one—shopping for the men in your life!

I need the perfect gift for my _______.

  • a. Father
  • b. Brother
  • c. Boyfriend
  • d. Friend
  • e. All of the above

Before you begin browsing, think about the type of gift you want to give. Should it be something practical orsensible? Something funny or weird? Something cheesy? Something sentimental? It all depends on the guy you’re shopping for. Once you figure this out, the rest is easy.

Whether you’re shopping for your dad, your best friend, or your boyfriend, go online and check out gift ideas at cool material. The website is designed to help you find the perfect presents for the men in your life. It’s organized so that you to shop for a specific type of guy. There are 14 “guy categories”, ranging from ‘The Techie’ and ‘The Gamer‘ to the ‘The Artist’ and ‘The Horologist’. These labels will narrow down your search by suggesting ideas that relate specifically to his interests. No matter what your budget is, the options are endless. And most importantly, everything’s unique!

Their articles will help you brainstorm too. One recent post titled, ‘9 Beers You Need to Drink This Winter,’ features a list of unique recommendations. If you’re struggling with ideas, don’t overthink it—guys are simple. Beer is typically a fan favorite among men! It’s casual, and inexpensive.

Here’s the gift list for the men in my life. I asked each of them to share their thoughts about receiving gifts, in order to get some real perspective. Feel free to follow their man-advice.

My FatherAlton Brown cookbook. He loves Alton’s cooking show, and he loves cooking. Can’t get beat that!

  • “Buy them what they
want, not what you want them to have.”

Older BrotherBeats headphones. They look awesome, and sound awesome. (Not to mention, they are super trendy right now) He loves music, and these will definitely upgrade his listening experience.

  • “I want things that I need.
Mainly food. Sometimes clothes. But seriously, just give me some cash and
    In-and-Out gift cards. That’s ideal.”

Younger BrotherLakers tickets. He told me that he wanted them! Easy.

  • “Just ask him what he wants. It’s better to be direct and
get him something you’ll know he will like. It’ll take some pressure off too.”

BoyfriendWoodchuck Cider. It’s his favorite drink—classy yet quirky.  He’ll love it, and I’ll score points with his friends too.

  • “Take a risk, surprise me!”

Guy friendUSA hat. It’s funny. He loves America, and wearing hats. I know he’ll appreciate this gem.

  • “Try to remember inside jokes that could make for funny
gifts. If you pull it off, you’re gift will definitely be memorable!”
