The idea of your boat being stolen and used tp commit a crime may not have occurred to you, but it is something that could happen. In order to protect yourself and your property, you may want to start by making sure you have a policy that covers theft of your boat through your California insurance company. Typically boat policies must be purchased separately from homeowner’s or other insurance policies. In addition, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) website outlines some steps you may want to take to help authorities recover your boat should it be stolen.
You may want to keep important information about your boat in a secure place. Information that may be useful to law enforcement officials should your boat be stolen include type and model number, length, description and color, engine make, model number and serial number, and hull identification number. Additional identification features are listed on the NICB website.
Another way to help police recover your boat, should it be stolen, is to engrave your driver’s license number on hidden locations on your boat. Ideal locations for engraving are the engine, the ship-to-shore radio, compass, stereo, depth sounder and trailer. It may also be wise to keep photos or video of your boat, engine and boating equipment should you need to show them to your California insurance agent in the event of theft. *
