As we turn our calendars to September this week, it’s hard to believe that the summer is ending and it’s time for students to head back to campus. If you have a college student who is returning to school this fall, make sure you’ve prepared for their insurance needs while they’ll be away.
Is your student taking a car back to school? Let your agent know, it’s likely you’ll need to update the mileage and garaging address for that vehicle on your California auto insurance policy.
If your college student is not taking a car to school, you may be eligible for a discount on your auto insurance. The general guideline for a “Distant Student Discount” is that the child be away at a school over 100 miles from home without a car.
Another planning aspect to consider is the coverage of your student’s personal belongings at the campus. Your homeowner’s policy can cover the belongings on campus as long as the student was a resident of your household immediately before heading off to college and as long as the student is under a certain age. There are specific limitations for how much personal property coverage a policy will provide –review your policy with your agent to be certain you have adequate coverage amounts.
If you have a student who is going away to college, call our office to discuss the specifics of your policies and potential changes that may help protect you and your family.
