Earlier this week, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook Washington DC, and residents along much of the east coast felt the effects. We didn’t feel the quake out West, but has the fear that we could be next left you wondering if it’s finally time to add Earthquake coverage to your California home insurance?

It’s been a year where the media has bombarded us with images of earthquake devastation – we’ve seen homes in shambles and businesses destroyed down to the foundation. These structures are a total loss, and yet none of them will be covered by a homeowners or commercial policy that doesn’t include EQ coverage.

It’s understandable that east coast residents may not have earthquake coverage on their home insurance. But would you believe that in California – “We’re Due” California – only 12% of homeowners have policies that include this coverage? That’s a whopping 88% of homeowners who are leaving it up to chance.

What makes people hold off on purchasing earthquake insurance?

The high deductible: A common reason that many choose to forego earthquake coverage is the high deductibles that can be associated with this type of policy. But the high deductible is nothing compared to what you’d pay to replace the entire cost of your home.

They think they already have coverage: Another reason people opt to skip earthquake coverage is simple misconception – they assume that natural disasters are covered on their California home insurance policy. Some are – but earthquakes are not. Your policy declaration page states in bold letters that you have no coverage against the peril of an earthquake.

The California Earthquake Authority (CEA) is one of the leading providers for earthquake insurance – check out the link below for more information on earthquake insurance and what types of coverage they offer.
