“The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”                     –Winston Churchill

I believe in optimism. It’s a powerful tool, a useful mindset, and valuable life lesson. It’s easy to bepessimistic—to complain, to worry, and to expect the worse. There’s less disappointment with an attitude like that. But optimism is easy too, and much more rewarding. You may be thinking, “What exactly is optimism? How can I do it?” Well this exclusive interview with a ‘real life optimist’, answers those questions, and sheds light on the concept of optimism.

I decided to interview someone special. She’s a true optimist, smiling extraordinaire, and life enthusiast. She lights up a room with her spirit, and inspires others with her attitude. She took some time to answer my questions, so here’s the inside scoop!

Name: Elizabeth McLaughlin

Occupation: College student

1. How would you define optimism?

  • Being able to look at a depressing situation, and still say
something good about. Or still learn something good from it.

2. Do you consider yourself an optimist?

  • Yeah. I was class optimist in high school.

3. What are some of your favorite optimistic quotes?

  • “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” –Confucius
  • “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it’s
yours. If it doesn’t, it never was.”
  • “Write it on your heart, that every day is the best day in
    the year.” –Emerson
  • “The most utterly lost of all days, is that in which you
    have not once laughed.” –Carlyle
  • “Obstacles are put in your way, to see if what you want is
    really worth fighting for.”

4. What makes you an optimist?

  • My outlook on life. The way I view what happens to me and
what happens to other people. It’s enthusiasm. It’s also showing people your
optimism. It’s one thing to just be positive by yourself, its another when you
can convince someone else to be optimistic about their situation.

5. How does your optimism affect others?

  • It allows other people to feel better about themselves and
their lives. I think when you’re an optimistic person, you can’t help but make
other people feel more content, and willing to change how they see what’s
    happening to them.

6. How do you feel about pessimists?

  • People like optimistic
people more than they like pessimistic people. People will laugh at people who
are pessimistic or sarcastic, but they don’t necessarily like them, or want to
be around them. It’s funny every once in a while, but after a while they will
    just bring you down.

7. What do you gain from being an optimist?

  • I gain a happier life. Fact. I am a happier person because I
    am an optimist.

8. Do you think people are drawn to you because of your attitude?

  • Yes. I hope so.

9. Are you always an optimist?

  • No. Just because I’m an
optimist, doesn’t mean I can’t have a realistic outlook on what’s going on
    around me.

10. How often do you smile/laugh each day?

  • A lot! Sometimes my face hurts.

11. Any final thoughts?

  • Without having friends that are also optimists, I wouldn’t
be able to be as happy and optimistic as I am. You need your friends there. You
    can’t do it alone.
