First impressions are important. These meetings can determine whether or not we get our dream job, and affect which people we attract to us. We can never take back first impressions, but we can prepare to make good ones. So here are 4 ways you can make sure to stand out!

1. Eye contact– It’s the foundation of communication! There’s a difference between looking at someone, and making a connection. When you make eye contact the right way, you’ll appear engaged, and confident. Start bypracticing when talking to friends, so that you can get comfortable with it. By the time you meet someone important, you’ll be well rehearsed!

2. Attire– Be mindful of what you wear. Whether you are heading to an interview, or spending the day running errands, appearance is crucial. Whether we like it or not, the clothing and accessories we wear say a lot about us. Watches for men, and jewelry and purses for women, are strong indicators—especially when meeting someone for the first time. We can’t always predict when we’ll run into someone important, but we can be prepared and dress appropriately, just in case!

3. Remember names– When you first meet someone, try and make a mental note of their name. This one seems obvious, but more often than not, it’s something that we overlook! When you are finished talking, you can end the conversation with: “It was so great to meet you so-and-so.” You’ll impress them with your memory, and become memorable yourself!

4. Body language– When meeting someone for the first time, a person is evaluated within three seconds! With such a small time frame to make an impression, your body language and attitude are key factors. Do your best to feel and look at ease—this way you’ll appear approachable. Stand up straight, (Just like your mom always says), and smile! A sincere happy smile goes a long way.
